Our role in the project
We began by completing an assessment of mechanical plant noise and a background noise survey to understand the existing noise climate. Following this initial engagement, we were next engaged to provide commissioning measurements at the completion of the project.
Specific considerations
- As the building was originally built in 1804, we had to focus on restoring the style and techniques of the original architect, John Soane
- To show how the space could be used for live and reproduced music
- To prevent noise pollution becoming an issue to the local college situated nearby.
- To propose appropriate attenuation measures for the mechanical plant items
- The build was required to comply with local authority planning regulations
Acoustic features of this project
- Configuring a noise model which was used to propose mitigation strategies for different levels of music noise, from simple background music played through standard speakers, to live music events.
- finding an acoustic solution that was both effective and efficient that did not stand in the way of the designer’s aesthetic decisions;
Following the completion of the project, Pitzhanger Manor won the RIBA London Award 2019 and RIBA National Awards 2019, as well as being shortlisted for AJ100 Building of the Year.
