Our role in the project

Adnitt Acoustics were commissioned through the main contractor, McAleer & Rushe, to provide acoustic design advice and recommendations for the City View Brighton Building.

We conducted an automated and attended environmental noise and vibration survey to establish the existing background and ambient noise levels at the boundary of the nearest noise sensitive premises and the proposed development

We made recommendations for the building fabric to comply with British Standard BS 8233,2014, the British Council for Offices design guidance and the BREEAM Technical Manual 2011.

We recommended noise emissions limits for any proposed mechanical and electrical plant to comply with Local Authority Planning Criteria.

Provided construction advice during the build.

Assessed mechanical plant noise emissions within the building and to the nearest noise sensitive premises and;

Undertook commissioning measurements to demonstrate compliance with the agreed criteria

Specific considerations

  • Proximity of the development to Brighton railway station and car park and the proximity of the development to noise sensitive receptors including residential properties and hotel accommodation.

Acoustic features of this project

  • Noise break-in from the surrounding environment, including the railway and car park as well as the station announcement system which needed to be attenuated through the building facade and provide a suitable acoustic environment.
  • Due to the proximity of the residential and hotel receptors, the mechanical plant had to be sighted and attenuated to meet the stringent criteria of the planning authority.
  • Other considerations included the acoustic performance of the window transoms to comply with Cat-A standards that would allow for an upgrade to Cat-B without significant additional works for the tenant.
  • The internal mechanical plant system had to be attenuated to comply with Cat-A standards such that any future tenant could expose soffits if desired and the system still comply with these standards.
