What we did

Part of Whitbread Plc, Premier Inn is the UK and Ireland's biggest and fastest growing hotel chain. Their Good Night Guarantee ensures customers get the soundest sleep in an ultra-comfy bed and a tasty breakfast for a great value price.

The control of external noise breaking into bedrooms and good sound insulation between rooms is therefore vital in all Premier Inn hotels. This is reinforced in the company's brand standards for acoustics which are some of the most rigorous in the hotel industry.

Achieving the limits on external noise break-in requires both detailed noise surveys to be carried out, and the acoustic performance of the building, glazing and ventilation to be incorporated at an early stage.

We have worked on a number of Premier Inn hotel design and builds, providing a range of acoustic services including:

  • Existing ambient noise surveys;
  • Noise and vibration design advice;
  • Design development guidance;
  • Site monitoring;
  • In-depth acoustic commissioning tests in compliance with:

Every Premier Inn project has its own particular acoustic challenges depending on the location and therefore existing ambient noise climate.

Acoustic features of some of these projects

Some of these acoustic challenges that we have addressed for Premier Inn hotels include:

  • Aircraft noise;
  • Existing external mechanical plant noise intrusion;
  • High external traffic noise from busy trunk roads and/or motorways;
  • Incorporating the required high performance glass* into a converted building;
  • Noise and vibration transfer from underground train tunnels;
  • Bedrooms that overlook streets with high levels of activity into the early hours of the morning;
  • Bedrooms next to a nightclub and limited by an existing building façade that has to be retained.

* The high performance acoustic glazing specified by Premier Inn also requires inherently noisy mechanical ventilation. To overcome this, we:

  • Test noise levels throughout the day and night;
  • Use noise modelling techniques to calculate noise levels on different façades;
  • Recommend where the amount of mechanical ventilation can be reduced.
